‘Science Express’ in India attracted 2.1 million visitors

Berlin/New Delhi, 09 June 2008 – After 217 days and 15,000 kilometres, the ‘Science Express’ has returned to New Delhi, its point of origin and final destination.
In the past few months, the Indo-German science train has stopped at stations in 57 regions of India. In interactive exhibitions spread to thirteen railroad wagons, 2.1 million visitors learned more about fascinating scientific discoveries and Germany’s research landscape.

In October 2007, German chancellor Angela Merkel and India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had met in New Delhi to launch the ‘Science Express’ on its journey across the subcontinent. Under the heading ‘Research in Germany – Land of Ideas’ and organised by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the rolling exhibition showcased Germany as a place of study and research. In this project born of a cooperation between the Max Planck Society and India’s Department of Science and Technology, interested visitors got a closer look at recent topics of research, as well as two railroad cars full of information about opportunities for education and research in India and Germany. The mobile exhibition on rails was backed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German companies BASF and Bosch. The ‘Science Express’ provides impressive proof of the virtues of a vibrant academic landscape as well as the benefits of a successful Public Private Partnership.
